Mount Kailash, also known as Kailash Parvat, holds the esteemed title of being the spiritual epicenter of the world. Much like the revered Mount Kailash, Lake Manasarovar stands as the ultimate destination for a pilgrimage of purity, drawing individuals from diverse religious backgrounds.
Situated within the Tibetan mountain region, Mount Kailash, with its majestic peak, and Lake Manasarovar, a lake of unparalleled beauty, offer a profound spiritual experience. The term ‘manas’ signifies the mind, ‘sarovar’ denotes a holy lake, and it is aptly named the Lake of Consciousness. This sacred lake captivates observers, especially under the full moon, and spans an impressive circumference of 88 kilometers. Furthermore, it serves as a sacred nexus for various faiths in Nepal, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Tibetan traditions, the pre-Buddhist animistic beliefs, and Jainism. Bathing in the waters of Lake Manasarovar is believed to absolve one of life’s sins.
The Kailash Peak, standing proudly at an elevation of 22,022 feet, and Lake Manasarovar, nestled at 14,954 feet, symbolize untouched beauty and serenity that is truly awe-inspiring, evoking a sense of oneness with Shiva. The optimal time to embark on a journey to Mount Kailash is between May and September.
As of 2025 there have been updates regarding visas and permits for Kailash tours:
The People’s Republic of China has revised its visa and travel permit policies for Tibet and Mount Kailash for the year 2025/26. Travelers and pilgrims planning to visit the Tibet Autonomous Zone now require a special travel permit from the foreign affairs department of China. These permits are issued under the supervision of local travel agencies in China/Tibet. The process involves submitting a copy of the passport and group travel details to obtain an entry permit and a sponsor-granted document. Additionally, all foreigners, except those from India, must complete an 11-page visa application form at the China Visa Center and personally undergo a biometric fingerprinting process. Subsequently, the Chinese embassy dispatches the group travel permit and visa for Tibet and Mount Kailash within 2 to 4 working days.
Therefore, it is advisable for all travelers to arrive at least 2 to 4 working days prior to their planned departure in Kathmandu, Nepal. Additionally, travelers are responsible for covering any extra expenses incurred during these additional days themselves.
